Energy Infrastructure Consultant

The Opportunity
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Energy Infrastructure Consultant to join a major facilities and estates operation in Belfast. Working across a large and diverse estate of 70+ buildings covering approximately 350,000m, you will provide specialist technical expertise across energy management, sustainability, HVAC and Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS). This is a highly varied role combining technical analysis, energy performance, building services and sustainability. You will identify opportunities to reduce energy and utility consumption, improve building performance and support the client’s longer-term sustainability and estate strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and analyse energy, water and waste performance across a large property portfolio.
- Produce monthly, six-monthly and annual energy and sustainability performance reports.
- Identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption, utility costs and carbon impact.
- Develop robust business cases for energy-saving and infrastructure improvement projects.
- Manage and support energy audits across the estate, producing clear technical reports and recommendations.
- Analyse complex energy and building-performance data and translate findings into practical improvement actions.
- Support the effective operation and optimisation of Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS).
- Respond to BEMS-related technical issues and coordinate appropriate remedial actions.
- Provide technical guidance relating to HVAC and building-services systems.
- Support planned preventative and reactive maintenance activities from an energy and technical perspective.
- Support compliance with relevant energy and environmental legislation, including Display Energy Certificate (DEC) and Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) requirements.
- Develop and maintain contingency plans relating to potential loss of utility supplies.
- Maintain accurate records and databases covering estate plant, equipment and energy performance.
- Provide technical input into capital investment projects, asset-management programmes and maintenance strategies.
- Support the development and delivery of Energy and Sustainability Asset Management Plans.
- Work closely with internal teams, contractors and client stakeholders to identify and implement energy-efficiency improvements.
- Keep up to date with emerging technologies, energy-management practices and developments within building engineering.
- Ensure activities are undertaken safely and in accordance with relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
About You
We are looking for an experienced technical professional with a strong background in energy management, sustainability, building services or mechanical engineering. You should be comfortable analysing technical information, identifying energy-efficiency opportunities and communicating recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Ideally, you will have:
- NVQ Level 6 or an equivalent qualification/level of experience within building services, mechanical engineering, energy or a related technical discipline.
- Strong knowledge of energy management, sustainability and building-services systems.
- Practical knowledge of HVAC and BEMS/BMS systems.
- Experience conducting or supporting energy audits.
- Demonstrable experience identifying opportunities to reduce energy and utility consumption.
- Knowledge of relevant energy and environmental legislation and standards, including ESOS and DECs.
- Understanding of carbon accounting and recognised energy-auditing methodologies.
- Knowledge of standards/frameworks such as ISO 50002, CIBSE TM22, PAS 2050 or the GHG Protocol would be advantageous.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex technical and consumption data.
- Excellent technical report-writing skills.
- Strong stakeholder and customer relationship management skills.
- Good commercial and financial awareness.
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- A proactive approach with the ability to work independently and take ownership of projects.
- Good Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Professional membership of an organisation such as CIBSE or the Energy Institute would be advantageous.
Additional Information
This is a site-based Belfast position and requires specific CTC/Vetting security clearance. The clearance process can take up to six months. The successful candidate will join a large facilities and estates operation with the opportunity to make a measurable contribution to energy performance, sustainability and long-term estate decarbonisation.
