Overview

In this Principal Arboricultural Consultant role, you will lead arboricultural surveys and assessments within a multidisciplinary Nature team to support planning and development projects. You’ll provide expert technical advice, produce BS5837-compliant reports, and guide clients and internal teams through planning processes. The position offers broad project variety, mentoring, and strong opportunities for career growth within a global infrastructure firm. You’ll work across offices and potentially manage projects and people, contributing to sustainable land management and biodiversity goals.

Responsibilities

  • Organise, oversee and undertake tree surveys for planning purposes and to assess tree condition
  • Prepare and review arboricultural reports to BS 5837:2012, Arboricultural Impact Assessments (AIA) and Arboricultural Method Statements (AMS)
  • Prepare and review Tree Condition Reports
  • Provide expert technical arboricultural advice and support for internal and external teams and clients
  • Act as an expert witness for planning appeals, DCO examinations or equivalent
  • Work independently or with other arboricultural and environmental professionals in planning, delivery and management of arboricultural services
  • Organise and undertake arboricultural site monitoring and supervision to discharge planning conditions
  • Contribute to developing the business, bidding and client engagement

Key requirements

  • Expert knowledge of arboricultural principles and BS5837:2012, BS8545:2014 and BS3998:2010
  • Expert knowledge of tree identification, inspection, condition assessment and management options
  • Technician’s Certificate in Arboriculture (or equivalent Level 3/4) with substantial demonstrable experience
  • Expert knowledge of UK arboriculture legislation, best practice and policy
  • Full clean UK driving licence for site attendance
  • Strong communication and presentation abilities
  • Client engagement and relationship management
  • Mentoring and collaboration within a multidisciplinary team
  • Arboricultural survey techniques
  • BS5837:2012 reporting and AIA/AMS preparation
