Overview

As a Principal Mechanical Engineer in our Water Team, you lead the mechanical design of water and wastewater systems, guiding projects from feasibility to construction. You collaborate across disciplines, liaising with clients and contractors to ensure compliant, high-quality solutions. You’ll drive bid activities, mentor junior staff, and help advance AECOM’s digital design tools. This role combines technical depth with leadership, contributing to resilient water infrastructure and community impact.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and review mechanical design for wastewater and water projects, including site surveys and stakeholder coordination
  • Design pumping stations, headloss calculations, pump selection, and processing equipment (screens, grit removal, penstocks, valves)
  • Develop odour control systems, plant and pipework layouts, technical specs and schedules (P&IDs, Wimes datasheets)
  • Engage in all design stages (Feasibility to Construction) ensuring compliance with design standards
  • Collaborate with other discipline teams and communicate with clients throughout design and planning
  • Delegate tasks, mentor junior staff, and manage bids and proposals
  • Ensure quality and timely delivery of designs within budgets; interface with major water clients
  • Contribute to and leverage AECOM’s digital tools (BIM, ProjectWise, intelligent P&IDs) and in-house solutions
  • Review client deliverables for adherence to standards and procedures
  • Support delivery of projects for water clients across the UK & Ireland

Key requirements

  • Extensive design experience in managing technical delivery of large-scale water engineering projects
  • BEng or MEng in a related engineering field with water and wastewater treatment experience
  • Chartered Member of a relevant Professional Institution
  • Proven experience in leadership, mentoring and line management
  • Experience in project management, task delegation and technical mentoring
  • Strong collaboration and coordination skills with teams, clients and stakeholders
