Job overview
This fellowship provides an outstanding opportunity for a motivated obstetric trainee or equivalent-grade doctor seeking to develop a career in academic obstetrics, maternal medicine and applied artificial intelligence in healthcare.
Applications are invited for an innovative four-year Clinical Research Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The post combines protected academic research time (50%) with clinical training and service provision in obstetrics (50%).The successful candidate will undertake a higher degree (MD) through Keele University, supervised by Professor William Parry-Smith and supported by an experienced multidisciplinary team of clinicians, data scientists, statisticians and implementation researchers.The fellowship focuses on the validation and implementation, an artificial intelligence-supported clinical decision tool designed to improve risk prediction and management of women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, particularly pre-eclampsia.The project is being undertaken in collaboration with leading national academic partners including King’s College London and the University of Strathclyde.
Main duties of the job
Research (50%)
- Register for an MD degree at Keele University.
- Lead delivery of the validation study.
- Contribute to protocol development, governance approvals and regulatory submissions.
- Coordinate data collection across participating sites.
- Work collaboratively with researchers at Keele University, King’s College London and the University of Strathclyde.
- Undertake statistical analysis with support from methodological experts.
- Present findings at national and international conferences.
- Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
- Contribute to grant applications and future research funding opportunities.
- Support dissemination and implementation of research findings.
- Participate in wider maternal medicine research activities across the Trust and partner institutions.

- Antenatal clinics.
- Obstetric and gynaecology emergency care.
- Day assessment unit activity.
- Clinical governance and audit activities.
- Teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate learners.
- Participation in a compliant on-call rota.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the 1:12 full-shift rota. The rota is compliant with the terms and conditions of the 2016 Junior Doctor Contract and WTD and has been carefully designed to maximise training opportunities for doctors whilst maintaining a safe and efficient service, with an even spread of long days and nights. The post holder will be contributing to 50% clinical activity including nights, on-calls and long days. The post holder will also be contributing to 50% research.

Qualifications
- MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
- MRCOG Part 1 and Part 2, or equivalent progress toward specialist training.
- Evidence of achievement of competencies equivalent to ST3 in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- Full MRCOG
- Previous higher degree (BSc, MSc or equivalent).
- Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification
- Research methodology training
Entry Criteria
- Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Minimum of three years postgraduate clinical experience
- Prior teaching experience
- Experience in NHS obstetric services
