Overview

As an experienced Clinical Scientist, you will lead radiation safety services for users of radioactive substances across multiple sites, supporting diagnostic nuclear medicine and molecular radiotherapy. You will serve as Radiation Protection Adviser and Radioactive Waste Adviser within an integrated team, driving service growth, governance, and accreditation processes. The role involves complex risk assessments, budgeting, and stakeholder engagement with NHS and private providers. Responsibilities

  • Act as RPA and RWA for the Trust and regional partners under service level agreements
  • Manage operational delivery of RPA/RWA services, including environmental TLD, instrument testing, and sealed source leak testing
  • Contribute to radiation safety governance and advise committees across Trusts
  • Perform complex calculations for shielding, public exposure, incidents, and radon exposure
  • Advise on major incident responses and participate in the NAIR scheme as a first responder
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies (HSE, EA, ONR, CTSA) as appropriate
  • Lead and support Section Head in service provision contracts, budgeting, staffing, and business planning
  • Provide line management to a small team of scientific staff

Key requirements

  • Direct provision of radiation safety advice and scientific services to users of radioactive substances
  • Accreditation or clear progression plan for RPA/RWA (RPA2000)
  • Advanced knowledge of radiological safety legislation, standards and governance
  • Ability to communicate complex scientific information to senior management and diverse groups
  • Experience in managing workloads, budgets, and service delivery across multiple sites
  • Experience in translational research or service development
  • Proven track record in scientific computing and IT relevant to the post
  • Experience in staff training and teaching on formal courses
