Mine Safety Officer
QME Mining Services NI is seeking an experienced and motivated Safety Officer to join our team working at Cavanacaw Gold Mine in County Tyrone.
The Role
Reporting directly to the Project Manager, the Safety Officer will provide practical health and safety support to the workforce, ensuring that safe systems of work are understood, implemented and continually improved. The successful candidate will have a strong presence on site and be comfortable working directly with supervisors, operatives and management.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out regular surface and underground inspections.
- Monitor compliance with site safety procedures, risk assessments and standard operating procedures.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences and assist with identifying corrective actions.
- Carry out safety observations and inspections and monitor close-out of actions.
- Support daily, weekly and monthly safety meetings and briefings.
- Deliver and assist with site inductions, toolbox talks and safety training.
- Promote a positive safety culture and continuous improvement throughout the workforce.
- Assist supervisors and managers with safety-related issues and provide practical advice.
- Monitor the use of PPE and compliance with site rules.
- Assist with emergency preparedness, drills and response arrangements.
- Maintain safety records, inspections, reports and relevant documentation.
- Work closely with the mine operator and other contractors to maintain consistent safety standards across the site.
- Promote a proactive approach to hazard identification, reporting and risk reduction.
About You
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Previous experience in mining, quarrying, construction, tunnelling or another high-risk industry.
- A recognised Health & Safety qualification such asNEBOSH General Certificate, IOSH or equivalent.
- Practical experience carrying out workplace inspections and risk assessments.
- Experience investigating incidents and implementing corrective actions.
- Good knowledge of Northern Ireland Health & Safety legislation and workplace requirements.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- The confidence to challenge unsafe practices in a professional and constructive manner.
- A practical, hands-on approach to safety.
- Good report-writing and computer skills.
- The ability to work effectively with management, supervisors, employees and contractors.
