The role:

The Health Care Support Worker provides high-quality direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse within the General Outpatients Department. Working as part of the multidisciplinary team, the post holder supports the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care, carrying out delegated clinical and technical duties for a defined patient group. The role contributes to maintaining a supportive environment for patients, visitors, and staff, ensuring high standards of care and participating in ongoing training and development. The post holder plays an important role in supporting outpatient clinics across a range of specialties within the Surgery & Anaesthetics Directorate.

This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for a Skilled Worker visa or a Heath and Care Worker visa. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is unable to provide candidates or employees with a Certificate of Sponsorship (COS).

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • Location based in Glasgow Royal Infirmary
  • Part-time position (30 hours per week)
  • Permanent Contract
  • Shift pattern for this post are 0800-1800 Monday – Saturday, Flexible working

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living.
  • Assist the Registered Nurse and where appropriate other members of the Clinical Team to deliver patient care
  • Co-operate with and maintain good relationships with other disciplines that are attending and treating clients to maximise patient care.
  • Maintain good relationships and an empathic approach to clients’ carers and relatives and refer them to a registered nurse for any questions they may have on the clients’ condition or for any suggestions or complaints that they wish to raise.
  • Report observed changes in the clients’ physical/psychological needs and participate in maintaining accurate and up-to-date records to ensure effective communication.
  • Work within Divisional policies and procedures to ensure maintenance of safe working practices for patients and colleagues.
  • Adhere to ward and unit procedures for the use of supplies and equipment in order to promote the effective and efficient use of resources.
  • Share responsibilities for key aspects of housekeeping and stock control. Demonstrating a good awareness of cost efficiency and contributing to the smooth running of the Ward/ Department.
  • Participate in personal career development plan to develop and maintain skills and personal growth through training and education.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times in line with current guidelines.
  • Must successfully complete Induction Course and Standards for Healthcare Workers.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Displays a caring disposition and has experience working in a caring environment/role.
  • Ability to work with people and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills/literacy/ numeracy skills.
  • Ability to carry out assigned tasks effectively in a busy environment.
  • Ability to fulfil the requirement of the job description including undertaking training identified as a requirement for the post.
