Overview

As Group Data Protection Officer you drive GDPR/UK GDPR compliance across the Springer Nature group. You coordinate cross-functional data protection initiatives and liaise with authorities, shaping the data protection program at scale. You work closely with Governance, Risk & Compliance and Legal to translate regulatory requirements into reliable guidance for the business. This role offers impact through improving risk management and safeguarding data subjects, with a clear path to senior leadership exposure.

Responsibilities

  • Inform and advise on GDPR/UK GDPR obligations across the group
  • Cooperate with supervisory authorities and act as main contact for data protection inquiries
  • Advise on data protection impact assessments and monitor their performance
  • Track and communicate regulatory developments and their impact to management
  • Collaborate with Legal and other teams on AI Act and GDPR/UK GDPR compliance
  • Design and deliver staff training on data protection
  • Map data protection risks into the risk management framework
  • Maintain Records of Processing Activities (ROPA) and support data breach management
  • Liaise with data subjects and manage access requests and complaints
  • Draft and update data protection policies and vendor/processor registers
  • Monitor international data transfers and advise on transfer mechanisms

Key requirements

  • In-depth knowledge of EU and UK data protection law
  • Experience implementing and maintaining a concise data protection framework
  • Experience with consent management systems
  • Degree or certificate in a data protection-related discipline and IAPP certification (or equivalent)
  • Experience in the legal department of a medium-to-large industrial company (ideally in publishing, IT, or communications)
  • Familiarity with cross-functional collaboration in matrix organizations
  • Fluent English and business-confident in another European language
  • Ability to respond to change and growth; strong organizational skills
