Senior Protection and Control Engineer

Our client is seeking a Senior Protection & Control Engineer to join its UK Energy business in Scotland on a permanent basis. Working across the transmission and distribution sectors, you will contribute to major power infrastructure projects supporting the transition to a Net Zero energy system, including overhead line and substation developments at 275kV and 400kV.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design protection and control systems for high-voltage electrical transmission and distribution networks
  • Develop engineering drawings, technical specifications and design documentation using tools such as AutoCAD and ETAP
  • Carry out technical calculations, system studies and analysis to support the reliability and performance of protection and control schemes
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant engineering standards, safety regulations and environmental requirements
  • Conduct site surveys and assessments to gather information for design development
  • Work closely with project managers, electrical engineers, construction teams and other disciplines to coordinate design requirements
  • Review design changes and provide technical support throughout installation, testing and commissioning
  • Complete design reviews and quality assurance checks while keeping up to date with developments in protection and control technology

Job Requirements:

  • Experience as a Protection & Control Engineer within electrical transmission, distribution or substation environments
  • Proven experience designing protection and control schemes for high-voltage networks, including 275kV and 400kV systems
  • HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent qualification
  • Knowledge of electrical networks, protection principles and applicable engineering standards
  • Experience interpreting technical documentation and producing detailed engineering design information
  • Knowledge of main suppliers’ substation control equipment, such as ABB, Hitachi, Siemens and GE
  • Understanding of industry-standard communication protocols, including IEC 61850 and IEC 60870
  • Working towards Chartered Engineer status and National Grid BP141 authorisation would be advantageous
