Overview

As Compliance Manager you will build and oversee MBSCL’s second-line compliance for the advice business, designing a risk-based monitoring programme and embedding the financial crime framework. You’ll provide practical compliance guidance across the end-to-end advice journey and oversee key oversight of the Aurora advice engine, promotions, and complaints. This is a build role with shaping scope as the function scales, reporting to the Head of Risk and Compliance and collaborating with the executive team. You’ll help ensure regulatory obligations are met while enabling good customer outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver a risk-based compliance monitoring and assurance programme across MBSCL’s advice service with action tracking to closure
  • Provide practical compliance advice on the end-to-end advice journey (COBS 9A, disclosures, charging, restricted advice, vulnerable customers) to ensure suitability and good outcomes
  • Oversee the advice service, including the Aurora engine and House Rules, with change governance and ongoing monitoring of outputs
  • Review and approve financial promotions and customer communications; maintain approvals records
  • Support the MLRO with the financial crime framework, risk assessment, policies, training, MI and suspicious activity escalation
  • Oversee customer due diligence, screening and monitoring performed by DML under the reliance model; ensure MBSCL retains responsibility for outcomes
  • Oversee DML service delivery under inter-group agreement; monitor SLAs and remediation for effective group oversight
  • Oversee complaints handling, root-cause analysis, and MI; support evidencing of Consumer Duty outcomes
  • Support SM&CR implementation, including responsibilities, certification, conduct rules and training scheme
  • Provide compliance input to new propositions and changes (mortgage/protection journeys, PROD, permissions boundary)
  • Own horizon scanning, regulatory change, and the compliance policy framework (conflicts of interest, gifts/hospitality, whistleblowing)
  • Support regulatory reporting, notifications and FCA engagement; prepare board-ready MI for senior stakeholders

Key requirements

  • Substantial experience in a second-line compliance role within a UK regulated retail advice, wealth, platform or fintech firm
  • Strong working knowledge of the FCA Handbook for retail investment advice (COBS including COBS 9A, Consumer Duty PRIN 2A, PROD, SYSC, DISP, SM&CR, financial promotions)
  • Hands-on experience designing and delivering compliance monitoring and assurance and reporting findings to senior stakeholders
  • Knowledge of financial crime requirements (MLR 2017, JMLSG, sanctions); experience with AML controls or reliance arrangements is a plus
  • Experience overseeing outsourced or intra-group service arrangements (service level monitoring)
  • FCA authorisation or building a new regulated service is highly desirable
  • Familiarity with digital/platform/automated advice and model-driven/AI risks is beneficial
  • Knowledge of Moneybox-advised products (ISAs, general investment accounts, pensions) and mortgage/protection introducer arrangements is advantageous
  • Clear writing ability to produce policies, MI and board-ready papers
  • Relevant qualification (e.g., Level 4/6 Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning or ICA Compliance) is desirable
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Ability to challenge colleagues with evidence and hold the line on regulatory obligations
  • Curiosity about technology and AI in customer experience

  • Financial crime controls and AML/KYC processes
