Project Engineer

Overview

In this role you will support the construction and delivery of a major UK rail infrastructure programme, taking engineering responsibility for a defined section or area. You will work closely with contractors, subcontractors and designers to resolve technical issues while maintaining engineering assurance. You will handle short-notice changes and coordinate with other disciplines, escalating complex issues as needed. This role offers practical delivery across diverse civil engineering domains and opportunities to shape project outcomes through strong commercial awareness and stakeholder collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Take engineering responsibility for a defined section, asset or construction area
• Manage technical issues and queries arising during construction
• Respond to short-notice engineering changes and ensure appropriate technical assurance
• Work directly with contractors, subcontractors and designers to resolve technical issues
• Challenge proposed solutions where engineering or assurance requirements are not met
• Have confident conversations with contractors and senior stakeholders when issues need resolving
• Understand the contractual and commercial implications of technical decisions and change
• Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and escalate complex issues when required

Key requirements

• Experience in civil engineering, rail, highways or major infrastructure construction with practical understanding of delivery during construction
• Broader experience in structures, highways or earthworks is beneficial
• Understanding of technical assurance, technical queries and engineering change
• Confidence working directly with contractors and subcontractors
• Strong commercial and contractual awareness
• Good stakeholder-management skills
• Ability to respond effectively to changing priorities or requirements on short notice
• Willingness to travel; driving is important; base location flexible
