Senior System Performance Engineer (Power System Analysis)

Overview

In this role you will lead advanced power system studies to enable low-carbon generation integration on the Scottish transmission network. You will work within a dedicated System Performance team that uses cutting-edge EMT modelling to deliver simulations and insights. You will mentor colleagues, drive innovative system modelling projects, and support grid operation through disturbance analysis, while representing SSEN Transmission in industry forums. This is a hands-on, impact-focused position at the heart of the energy transition.

Responsibilities

• Define and deliver detailed simulation studies for connecting renewables, FACTS devices, HVDC links and railway feeders
• Provide technical leadership and mentoring to less experienced colleagues
• Lead innovation projects to keep system modelling and monitoring at the forefront
• Support network operation through event and disturbance analysis
• Represent SSEN Transmission in external meetings and industry workgroups

Key requirements

• Experience in power system analysis and planning within electricity transmission
• Deep understanding of power system modelling with expertise in at least three areas (load flow/short circuit, dynamic RMS, power quality and system monitoring, EMT for transients, EMT for control interaction studies and automation scripting)
• Experience with industry tools (PSS/E, Power Factory, PSCAD, Matlab/Simulink)
• Knowledge of Python scripting advantageous
• Strong knowledge of electricity industry interfaces (regulator, ESO, TOs, DNOs)
• Degree in electrical engineering or related numerical discipline; ideally Chartered Engineer; ability to write clear technical reports
