Overview

In this role, you act as the transport planning lead for regeneration and major development projects, embedding transport priorities in urban planning. You’ll shape strategies, policies and business cases to support growth, health and climate objectives. Collaborating with cross-functional teams and regional partners, you’ll influence transport solutions and improve service delivery for communities. This role offers scope to influence regeneration, sustainability and inclusive growth within Gateshead.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary transport planning interface for regeneration and major developments, ensuring transport priorities are integrated into urban core developments and Local Plan updates
  • Contribute to developing transport strategies, policies, schemes and business cases aligned with council priorities (economic development, climate change, health)
  • Foster relationships with Nexus, public transport operators and regional partners to enable improvements
  • Analyse transport data and trends to inform policy and prepare reports and cabinet briefing papers
  • Represent the Council at local and regional transport forums, collaborating with neighbouring authorities
  • Provide professional guidance by staying current with transport policy, legislation and best practice
  • Promote a customer-focused service delivery and continuous improvement
  • Support the Team Leader and contribute to the broader Transport Planning Team work

Key requirements

  • Degree-level education, a relevant professional qualification, or equivalent experience
  • Significant demonstrable experience in a transport strategy, transport policy or related environment with appropriate responsibility
  • Strong knowledge of sustainable transport policies and emerging challenges
  • Experience developing policy, strategy, business cases, reports or evidence-based recommendations
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with diverse stakeholders
  • Strong analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills with ability to manage priorities
