Technical Director (Roads)

Overview

In this senior role, you lead technical delivery and design management for large-scale Roads projects in Scotland & North East. You’ll guide multi-disciplinary teams, develop client relationships, and uphold quality and safety standards. You’ll shape the technical direction for major programmes, balance scope, time, and budget, and drive opportunity through tendering and collaboration with cross-functional teams. Responsibilities

• Lead technical project teams to deliver project scope
• Act as Design Manager on complex multi-disciplinary programmes
• Provide technical leadership and mentoring in the office
• Model health, safety and wellbeing leadership
• Oversee technical preparation, reviews and deliverable checks
• Manage project risk and multi-disciplinary coordination
• Resource planning to meet changing workloads
• Ensure compliant designs on time and within budget per CDM, QA and technical standards
• Participate in tender bids and business development
• Develop relationships with other WSP teams to leverage resources
• Set technical leadership tone fostering a fair, supportive culture

Key requirements

• Experience leading large technical teams
• Proven delivery leadership and financial control of major road programmes
• Track record as Design Manager on major roads programmes with multi-disciplinary integration and QA
• Broad project experience in civil engineering and multi-disciplinary highways projects
• Experience in technical and financial leadership of Design and Build contracts
• Ability to use and check outputs in Autodesk Civils 3D, Bentley OpenRoads Designer and/or PDS
• Strong change management, communication and stakeholder engagement skills
• Chartered Civil Engineer with ICE or CIHT; fellowship status or progress towards fellowship
• Experience with Designers Duties under CDM regulations
