Principal Software Engineer (Java)

Overview

In this Engineer IV role, you will design and deliver platform capabilities powering Anaplan’s enterprise-scale APIs, edge routing, and developer acceleration. You will build high-throughput backend engines, drive multi-tenant isolation, and shape API-first solutions used by thousands of tenants and users. Collaborating with senior engineers, you will set technical direction and improve deployment infrastructure with GitOps and containerization. You’ll own features end-to-end, boost observability, and tackle complex concurrency and CORS challenges. This is a chance to lead technical excellence and mentor global teams in a fast-growing, AI-enabled platform company.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, delivery, and architecture of platform capabilities (API gateways, edge routing, developer acceleration)
• Build and scale backend engines for multi-tenant, high-throughput environments
• Set technical direction with architects and senior engineers on complex initiatives (e.g., Vanity URLs, JWT flows, cross-service proxying)
• Drive deployment infrastructure evolution with GitOps (ArgoCD, Helm) and container orchestration
• Own foundational features end-to-end from design to production; improve observability and address concurrency (database locks, connection starvation)
• Deliver backend Java/Kotlin integration with UI components; address CORS and distributed edge proxy requirements
• Mentor engineers across global teams through design reviews, pair programming, and hands-on leadership

Key requirements

• Extensive experience in enterprise-scale, high-throughput software engineering
• Knowledge of AI tools and concepts (agentic programming, LLM-assisted workflows) to accelerate platform engineering
• Deep expertise in backend JVM languages (Java and/or Kotlin) and distributed systems internals
• Proven track record delivering API-first infrastructures and API Gateways (e.g., Traefik) under heavy load
• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, containerized deployments, and CI/CD pipelines; strong GitOps familiarity (ArgoCD)
• Solid grounding in event-driven architecture, real-time data processing, and scalable database transactions
• Ability to balance rapid prototyping with long-term quality; bias for action
• Excellent technical communication to align globally distributed teams and build consensus
• Experience shaping architecture for enterprise-scale platforms (preferred)
• Polyglot mindset with comfort in React, Python, or Go when needed (preferred)
