Principal Electrical Engineer – HV Substation Design (UK & Ireland)

Overview

As an HV Substation Design Engineer, you will lead design delivery for challenging energy infrastructure projects. You’ll contribute to a cross-functional Transmission and Distribution team, shaping substation layouts and FEED through to tender and construction support. You’ll interact with major clients and external partners, ensuring design quality and value. This role offers impact across UK and Ireland projects that drive the energy transition and grid modernization.

Responsibilities

• Produce primary plant layouts for HV substations
• Lead engineering design input to major infrastructure projects
• Undertake Project Development/Pre-construction activities (optimum cable routes, etc.)
• Prepare equipment specifications for HV Plant and related equipment
• Develop specifications with technology specialists and external partners
• Create tender specifications and perform tender evaluations
• Provide design assurance of tender documentation and during supplier meetings
• At construction, review supplier designs, conduct manufacturing assurance audits, attend FAT, and support commissioning and fault resolution
• Be a trusted partner to key clients
• Offer mentorship and guidance to junior team members

Key requirements

• Degree in Electrical Engineering
• Experience with consultancy, contractor or utility in the energy sector
• Client experience with National Grid, ESB, EirGrid, SHET, SSE, SPT or other transmission utilities in UK or Ireland
• Extensive FEED designer, detailed design, or owner’s engineer experience
• Experience designing HV infrastructure at concept and FEED stages
• Experience in detailed design and design assurance; owner’s engineer exposure advantageous
• Understanding of electrical AC HV Plant infrastructure and equipment (AIS and GIS)
• Good team player with client-facing mindset
• Ability to work across multiple projects
• Full driving licence
• Ideally project management experience (budget, time, quality)
• Experience managing multi-discipline engineering projects
