Overview

As a Staff Software Engineer on GitHub’s Traffic Team, you will help maintain and evolve the load-balancing and traffic-management platform that underpins global-scale software delivery. You’ll work with a distributed, remote-first team to design reliable, scalable solutions and mentor peers in technical and architectural decisions. The role blends hands-on engineering with shaping the platform’s evolution to serve millions of developers. You’ll engage across time zones, contributing to high-impact infrastructure that powers GitHub’s services.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical decision making and architecture
  • Design and implement scalable, reliable and performant solutions (rate-limiting, routing)
  • Maintain and improve the GitHub Load Balancer and related traffic systems
  • Code primarily in Go and Ruby on Rails
  • Mentor engineers on technical and architectural decisions
  • Participate in on-call rotation and team meetings

Key requirements

  • 9+ years of software engineering experience with production software delivery in multiple languages (C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, Python) or equivalent educational path with substantial industry experience
  • 4+ years building and supporting large, high-traffic applications at scale in platform/infrastructure domains
  • 4+ years supporting cloud-native workloads in Azure, AWS or Google Cloud
  • 2+ years experience maintaining a Load Balancer with abuse protection mechanisms (DDoS, load shedding)
  • Experience with distributed, remote teams and strong written communication
