Technical Manager – Microbiology

Overview

In this role you lead the TB/Bacteriology/Mycology services across NHS Lanarkshire, ensuring high-quality, safe, and timely laboratory work. You will manage staff, budgets, and equipment, align services with policy, and drive CPD and service development. You collaborate with clinical leads and represent the service at regional and national meetings. You influence governance, compliance, and staff welfare to support excellent patient care.

Responsibilities

• Manage and develop staff in TB/Bacteriology/Mycology areas, including CPD and performance management
• Oversee service and maintenance of automated analysers and budget for reagents and supplies
• Ensure delivery of NHS Lanarkshire policy in collaboration with microbiology leadership
• Provide training and development for Biomedical Scientists and support staff
• Deliver TB/Bacteriology/Mycology laboratory services across three acute hospitals
• Interpret and apply policies for the service; represent the service at regional and national meetings
• Lead scientific and technical procedures in line with regulatory requirements
• Monitor compliance and drive performance improvements
• Potential site management responsibilities and governance of laboratory staff
• Recommend and implement new equipment, methods, and organisational changes

Key requirements

• Registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC)
• MSc in Biomedical Science or Higher Specialist in TB/Bacteriology/Mycology
• Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS)
• Management experience
• Evidence of continuing professional development at a specialist level
• Clinical and scientific skills and service development experience
