Lead AI Software Engineer

Overview

In this role, you will lead AI-enabled software delivery across squads and platforms, translating designs into scalable, production-ready code. You’ll blend software engineering expertise with AI-native practices to ensure secure, verifiable outputs aligned with business needs. You will guide teams, oversee complex components, and drive testing, observability, and operational readiness throughout the SDLC. This position offers impact through shaping AI-driven software delivery within Vodafone’s VOIS ecosystem.

Responsibilities

• Lead build execution within a squad, platform capability, or engineering domain
• Translate specs and designs into actionable implementation plans
• Decompose solutions into small, testable increments
• Coach engineers and AI coding agents through implementation and release
• Deliver and oversee complex, high-risk software components
• Review AI-generated and human-written code for quality and security
• Advance engineering excellence via automated testing, observability, and production verification
• Support CI/CD processes and service ownership
• Ensure explainable, traceable, secure AI outputs aligned with standards
• Escalate architectural ambiguity and cross-domain risks
• Identify recurring issues and improve controls and quality practices
• Coach on AI-native software engineering, review, testing, and responsible AI usage
• Contribute to evolution of AI-native SDLC practices and developer experience

Key requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience with production-grade software
• Strong Java and Spring Boot, experience with React or Angular
• Proven RESTful APIs, microservices, and platform services design
• Cloud-native architectures, distributed systems, containerised environments
• Experience with event-driven systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ)
• Leadership in agile engineering teams or domains
• CI/CD, automated testing, observability, production support
• Ability to translate requirements into actionable plans
• Code review skills including AI-generated outputs
• Experience with AI-assisted engineering tools and responsible AI practices
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and collaboration skills
