Senior Design Engineer

Overview

In this role you will develop safe, practical and cost-effective structural steel solutions for a varied portfolio of projects across the UK and Europe. You will work closely with clients and project teams to ensure designs are right from the outset, supporting the design process from initial concepts through to completion. You’ll influence buildability, efficiency and compliance while maintaining high design quality. This is an opportunity to shape structural solutions in a well-established steel specialist environment.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop structural steel solutions to meet project requirements
• Produce and review structural calculations ensuring safety and practicality
• Apply loadings and assess stresses and load paths
• Work from drawings, specifications and client requirements
• Develop design solutions using industry-standard software
• Collaborate with clients, teams and multidisciplinary project groups
• Support tendering and prepare technical information for bids
• Ensure compliance with legislation, standards and health and safety
• Consider buildability, efficiency and cost in designs
• Provide technical input and progress updates to clients and management
• Maintain high design quality throughout the process
• Stay up to date with changes in standards, technology and best practice

Key requirements

• Strong knowledge of structural mechanics and engineering principles
• Extensive experience in a structural design engineering role
• Strong structural design and calculation experience
• Experience within structural steelwork or a closely related environment
• Experience with Tekla Structural Designer / Fastrak Building Designer
• Experience with Fastrak Portal Frame
• Experience with Masterframe, STAAD.Pro or similar
• Experience with Masterseries Connections or other connection design software
• Ideally, experience in structural connection design
• Ability to interpret drawings, specifications and engineering requirements
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with clients and internal teams
