Role & Responsibilities
We are looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to take technical ownership of complex mechanical components, assemblies and sub-systems from concept through to production-intent release.
This is a hands-on engineering role combining strong mechanical design, CAD and drawing capability with senior-level engineering judgement and component ownership. You will develop and mature engineering solutions through concept, detailed design, analysis, prototype build, verification and release, ensuring technical risks are understood and appropriately managed.
Reporting to the Head of Mechanical, Design, Analysis and Integration and working closely with Systems Engineering, CAE, Manufacturing, Quality, Procurement and suppliers, you will help deliver robust, manufacturable, serviceable and validated engineering solutions while balancing product performance, quality, cost, mass, technical risk and programme timing.
Responsibilities include:
- Own mechanical components, assemblies and work packages from concept through verification and production release.
- Develop concepts, 3D CAD, assemblies and production-intent engineering drawings.
- Apply engineering principles, materials knowledge, GD&T, tolerance analysis and first-principles calculations to develop robust solutions.
- Design for performance, durability, manufacture, assembly, sealing, corrosion resistance and serviceability.
- Work with CAE and Validation to define load cases, review results and provide evidence supporting design decisions and requirement compliance.
- Lead or support design reviews, DFMEA and technical risk assessments, ensuring risks and failure modes are understood and mitigated.
- Support prototype builds, suppliers and production release, ensuring CAD, drawings, BOMs and engineering data are accurate and controlled.
- Work across Manufacturing, Procurement, Quality and suppliers, while providing technical guidance and contributing to improved engineering standards.
Required Skills & Experience
What We’re Looking For
- Demonstrable experience developing complex mechanical components, assemblies or sub-systems from concept through verification and release.
- Strong 3D CAD and production-intent drawing capability, including GD&T, tolerance definition and datum strategy.
- Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals with the ability to apply engineering calculations and first-principles methods.
- Good knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes and DFM/DFA.
- Experience of DFMEA, technical risk assessment, engineering change and structured root-cause problem solving.
- Ability to interpret CAE, calculations and test evidence and translate findings into practical engineering decisions.
- Sound engineering judgement and communication skills, with the ability to work across disciplines and balance performance, quality, safety, cost, mass, timing and risk.
- Experience in some of the following would be advantageous:
- Siemens NX and Teamcenter, or comparable high-end CAD and PLM systems.
- Design of cast, machined, fabricated, moulded or composite components.
- Knowledge of fasteners, adhesives, sealing systems, corrosion protection and surface treatments.
- Prototype development, commissioning, validation and direct supplier engagement.
- Marine, automotive, aerospace, off-highway or another demanding product-development environment.
- Knowledge of ICE, transmission or propulsion systems.
Personal Attributes
- Strong sense of ownership, accountability and engineering judgement.
- Structured and pragmatic problem solver who supports decisions with appropriate engineering evidence.
- Clear communicator who works constructively across disciplines, challenges appropriately and escalates risks early.
- Collaborative approach with a commitment to engineering quality, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Degree-qualified, or able to demonstrate equivalent relevant engineering experience, in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Marine Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Professional registration or progress towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status would be advantageous but is not essential.
Additional Information
- Location: Coventry.
- Working pattern: Minimum three days in the office, including Wednesday.
- Standard hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM / 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with flexibility based on business needs.
- A full job description detailing the complete scope, responsibilities and accountabilities of the role is available on request.
