Job Description:

Applications Engineer

Location: West Midlands (Five days a week on site)

We are recruiting an Applications Engineer for an established manufacturer of low voltage electrical distribution equipment. Once an order is secured, you will take ownership of its technical delivery: interpreting the customer specification, producing drawings and a bill of materials, supporting the factory build and liaising with the customer through to delivery. The work is predominantly LV switchgear, with limited control panel work.

The role:

You will typically manage three to four projects at a time. This is a hands-on engineering role that combines 2D AutoCAD work with time on the shop floor and occasional site or customer visits. You will work closely with production, sales, tendering and site services to keep each project moving.

Key responsibilities

  • Review secured orders, contract files and quotations against the customer specification and requirements.
  • Produce 2D AutoCAD general arrangement and schematic drawings for customer approval, together with component schedules and a full bill of materials.
  • Prepare manufacturing packs for the shop floor and support production as the switchgear is built, including regular progress reviews.
  • Inspect panels before testing to check that the build meets the project requirements.
  • Maintain communication with customers, production and sales on dates, progress and any changes or delays.
  • Coordinate with the site services team on installation requirements; support factory acceptance tests, customer visits and site meetings when required.
  • Resolve post-delivery shortages or rework, maintain accurate project records and contribute to production meetings.
  • Provide technical input to the tendering and sales teams when required.

What you will bring

  • Confident, practical use of 2D AutoCAD and the ability to interpret electrical drawings and customer specifications.
  • Fundamental electrical knowledge and the confidence to discuss technical requirements with customers and production colleagues.
  • Experience taking responsibility for several engineering projects or orders at once, from drawings through manufacture and delivery.
  • A willingness to spend time on the shop floor and be on site

Relevant backgrounds

Experience with an electrical contractor would be particularly relevant.

Candidates from LV switchgear or electrical distribution manufacturers may also bring directly transferable experience.

An HNC or other recognised engineering qualification would be beneficial, but is not essential.

Specific LV switchgear knowledge would be an advantage; training is available for someone with the right electrical fundamentals and practical engineering experience.

Working hours and benefits Monday to Thursday

7:30 am to 4:45 pm; Friday, 7:30 am to 12:00 pm. The package includes 25 days’ holiday plus bank holidays and a workplace pension. Salary will depend on experience.
