Photographer (product + portrait/headshot), London-based
We’re a deep-tech startup based on Cambridge Heath Road in East London, working on advanced battery recycling. We’re looking for a photographer to come to our office for a mixed shoot of technology and materials, plus team photos.
We work with battery-grade powders and need someone with close-up/product photography experience, ideally in an industrial, technical, or material-focused setting.
Tech photos will include our materials (sheets, fine powders, and liquids), machinery, and a small warehouse-style working space. Our main challenge is that we need the photos to reflect that we’re scaling up, rather than looking lab-scale. As one example, we’re thinking powder photographed on top of a barrel rather than in a small jar, or tight close‑ups on machinery. Open to your ideas here too.
We’d also like a few short (few‑second) video clips of the materials, e.g. powder moving in a jar, if that’s something you can offer alongside stills.
We’re happy to work with students or photographers building their portfolio, as long as they can show some existing close‑up/product work, ideally in a technical setting.
Details:
Two categories of imagery:
- Team and group shots:
- Individual portraits of six team members
- Group shots, both posed and candid/working
- A mix of formal (investor deck, website “team” page) and informal (LinkedIn, culture content)
- Should read as technically credible people doing serious engineering, not corporate stock‑photo energy
- Engineering and material shots:
- Robotic and mechatronic equipment at the facility
- Close‑up material shots: recovered active materials, recycled copper, graphite. Clean, well‑lit macro/product‑style shots that show texture and quality
- Engineers working with equipment (hands‑on, mid‑process, adjusting/inspecting) – authentic, not staged
- Facility wides that establish scale and seriousness of the operation
Tone and style:
- Deep‑tech, not sustainability marketing. Avoid green‑washed clichés: no leaf icons, no soft‑focus “eco” lighting, no stock imagery of hands cupping soil or similar. This is industrial and technical, not lifestyle.
- Credible over polished. Natural light effect where possible (site doesn’t have great natural light – lighting needed), real environments, real equipment
- Reference points: think industrial/lab photography used by companies like Redwood Materials, Northvolt, or serious robotics startups.
- Colour palette: cool, neutral, metallic tones (steel, copper, graphite black) rather than warm or saturated. Avoid heavy colour grading or filters.
- Consistency: shots should work together as a coherent set for a pitch deck and website: same lighting language across team and equipment shots.
Shot list:
- 6 x individual portraits (indoor, facility or plain background)
- 2-3 group shots (formal and candid)
- 8-10 equipment/robotics shots (wide and detail)
- 5-8 material close‑ups (recovered CAM/AAM, copper, graphite)
- 4-6 “in process” working shots (engineers with equipment)
- Facility establishing shots (2-3)
Practical notes:
- Location: our facility, 256 Cambridge Heath Road, London E2 9DA
- Some equipment and process areas involve unpublished process details – we’ll flag any areas or angles that are off‑limits on the day, and may ask to review shots before certain images are used externally
- Standard PPE required in parts of the facility (we’ll provide)
- Half‑day shoot expected to be sufficient; can extend if needed
- Full‑resolution edited RAW‑derived files (JPEG/TIFF), colour‑corrected
- Delivered via download link within 5 working days
- Full usage rights for marketing, website, and investor materials (please quote licensing terms)
Skills and Experience Required
- Product photography
- Entry level
- Open to students and photographers building their portfolio
