Associate Partner – Civil Engineering

Location: Bristol | Hybrid Working

Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

Contract: Permanent | Full-time

The opportunity

An established multidisciplinary built environment consultancy is looking to appoint an experienced civil engineering professional to take on a senior position within its Bristol (or Exeter) team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an Associate, Associate Director or experienced Principal Civil Engineer who is ready to take on broader responsibility for managing people, developing client relationships and contributing to the continued growth of a civil engineering service.

The role combines technical expertise with commercial and operational responsibility, offering the opportunity to manage a team, oversee a varied portfolio of projects and play an active part in shaping the future direction of the business.

You’ll work across a broad mix of developments, from residential and commercial schemes through to larger, more technically complex infrastructure and multi-phase projects, collaborating with clients, consultants, contractors and other engineering disciplines.

The business is looking for someone who can bring together sound technical judgement, practical project delivery experience and a commercial approach to managing work and relationships.

This is a position for someone who enjoys remaining connected to the technical side of engineering while also taking on greater responsibility for people, clients and business development.

The role

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and developing a team of civil engineers and technicians, supporting performance, technical development and progression
  • Overseeing the delivery of civil engineering design services across a varied portfolio of development and infrastructure projects
  • Managing highways, drainage, external works and associated infrastructure design activities
  • Providing technical oversight and guidance on design challenges, ensuring solutions are practical, coordinated and commercially appropriate
  • Supporting projects from early feasibility and planning through detailed design, technical approvals and construction
  • Overseeing drainage strategies, flood risk assessments, earthworks and wider development infrastructure requirements
  • Managing project resources, workloads, programmes and technical deliverables
  • Reviewing project financial performance, budgets, fee expenditure and resource allocation
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with existing clients, developers and wider project stakeholders
  • Identifying new business opportunities, preparing fee proposals and contributing to the development of new client relationships
  • Coordinating with architects, structural engineers, building services engineers and other multidisciplinary project teams
  • Liaising with local authorities, statutory bodies and approving organisations to progress technical approvals
  • Supporting the continued development of the civil engineering team and contributing to wider business planning and growth

You’ll have the opportunity to influence both project delivery and the wider development of the team, with responsibility for maintaining technical standards, managing commercial performance and ensuring clients receive a consistent, high-quality service.

About you

We’re interested in speaking with experienced civil engineering professionals who have:

  • A strong background in civil engineering design, ideally within a consultancy or multidisciplinary environment
  • Experience managing or developing civil engineering teams and coordinating technical resources
  • A good understanding of development infrastructure, particularly highways, drainage, external works and earthworks
  • Experience delivering projects from initial feasibility and planning through detailed design and construction
  • Strong technical knowledge of foul and surface water drainage, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), highway design and associated infrastructure
  • Familiarity with relevant highway and drainage agreements, including Sections 38, 278, 104, 106 and 185
  • Experience working with local authorities, statutory undertakers and other approving bodies
  • The ability to manage multiple projects, technical deliverables and competing priorities
  • Commercial awareness, including experience managing project fees, resources, budgets and financial performance
  • Experience developing client relationships, identifying new opportunities and contributing to work-winning activities
  • Strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skills
  • A practical, collaborative approach and the confidence to make decisions and provide technical guidance

A relevant degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering would be expected.

Chartered Engineer status (CEng), membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE) or an equivalent professional qualification would be highly regarded. Individuals with substantial relevant experience who are working towards chartership may also be considered.

Experience using Civil 3D, drainage design software such as InfoDrainage, and an understanding of BIM processes would be advantageous.

We’re particularly interested in individuals who combine strong technical design experience with the ability to manage people, develop business relationships and take responsibility for the commercial performance of their projects and team.

You don’t necessarily need to have held an Associate Partner title previously. An experienced Associate, Associate Director or senior-level engineer with the right technical, management and commercial experience could be well suited to this opportunity.

Why consider this opportunity?

  • Take on a senior position within an established multidisciplinary consultancy
  • Play an active role in the management and continued development of a civil engineering team
  • Work across a varied portfolio of residential, commercial and infrastructure developments
  • Combine technical engineering expertise with wider people management and commercial responsibilities
  • Build and strengthen relationships with developers, clients and project delivery partners
  • Contribute to business development, future workload and the longer-term growth of the service
  • Work collaboratively with experienced professionals across multiple built environment disciplines
  • Flexible and hybrid working opportunities
  • Ongoing professional development and opportunities for longer-term career progression
  • The opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to both project outcomes and the direction of the wider business

Interested?

Whether you’re an established Associate or Associate Director, or an experienced Principal Civil Engineer looking to move into a broader management position, we’d be pleased to hear from you.

We’re particularly interested in speaking with individuals who enjoy the technical challenges of civil engineering but are equally motivated by developing people, building client relationships and contributing to the growth of a successful business.
