Charity Management Accountant

Overview

In this role you will manage day-to-day finance operations for Merlin’s Magic Wand charities in the UK and USA, delivering accurate reporting and robust controls. You will partner with the Charities Finance Director to provide insightful financial analysis that informs decision-making across fundraising, delivery and leadership teams. You’ll ensure audit-ready records and drive process improvements to boost efficiency and governance. This is a hands-on, cross-border role with a clear impact on delivering joy and memories for children facing adversity.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day finance operations for UK and US charities
• Produce monthly management accounts and financial reporting
• Maintain balance sheet reconciliations and internal controls
• Support compliance, restricted fund accounting and charitable governance
• Process core transactions: purchase ledger, sales ledger, journals, payment runs
• Coordinate annual audit: liaise with external auditors and prepare schedules
• Assist year-end reporting and implement audit-driven improvements
• Drive process improvements to enhance efficiency and consistency across both charities

Key requirements

• Recent experience in a finance team, ideally in a management accounting role
• Experience preparing monthly management accounts and supporting reporting
• Strong financial analysis and ability to provide actionable MI
• Experience processing day-to-day transactions and maintaining accurate records
• Strong Excel and Word skills
• Experience with Microsoft Dynamics NAV/Navision or similar (desirable)
• Charity VAT knowledge beneficial; charity accounting/fund accounting/Gift Aid advantageous
• Excellent communication and ability to explain financial information to non-finance stakeholders
• Attention to detail and accuracy
• Proactive problem solving and continuous improvement mindset
