Overview
As a Robotics Hardware Engineer, you will own end-to-end hardware prototyping, integration, and bring-up to support robotics data collection and AI policy evaluation. You will design and validate mechanical, electrical, and firmware interfaces across robot platforms, enabling reliable sensor and actuator integration. The role challenges you to iterate fast on end-effectors, teleoperation devices, and test fixtures, while ensuring lab uptime and system reliability. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to advance robotics hardware development and testing in service of AI research and product learning.
Responsibilities
- Design, fabricate, and iterate on robotic end-effectors, teleoperation devices, sensor mounts, and test fixtures from concept CAD through benchtop validation
- Bring up, integrate, and validate actuators, cameras, tactile/IMU sensors, and PCBAs across robot platforms using CAN, EtherCAT, SPI, I2C, USB
- Write and maintain microcontroller firmware (C/C++) and low-level Linux drivers, hardware interfaces, and calibration/diagnostic scripts (Python, C++)
- Design and build wiring harnesses, electronics packaging, and cable routing for articulating joints
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and firmware issues; perform RCCA to maximize lab uptime and MTBF
Key requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related field
- 4 years of robotics hardware development, electromechanical prototyping, or robot systems integration
- Experience in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Onshape, NX, or Creo) and direct prototyping (3D printing, machining, laser cutting, or cable harnessing)
- Experience writing embedded firmware for microcontrollers (C/C++) and low-level hardware interfaces, driver, or diagnostic code in Python and C++ on Linux
- Experience debugging with lab instrumentation (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, DMMs) and embedded buses (CAN, EtherCAT, SPI, I2C, USB)
- 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Onshape, NX, Creo)
- Direct prototyping (3D printing, machining, laser cutting, cable harnessing)
