Design Manager

Overview

In this role you lead the design delivery for large Transmission HV substation projects, coordinating multi-disciplinary teams and external designers. You will drive design management through tender, FEED, and detailed design phases, ensuring compliance and constructability. You’ll partner with cross-functional stakeholders to manage programme and design risk, guiding standards adherence and value-driven solutions. Responsibilities

• Lead engineering design delivery for major HV substation projects (132/275/400 kV)
• Oversee design management at tender and Early Contractor Engagement stages
• Integrate HV Plant, Protection & Control and Civils from internal and external designers and OEMs
• Act as Principal Design Representative ensuring CDM 2015 compliance and design information control
• Support continual design management process improvements within the Business Unit
• Review design packs for technical compliance, quality and completeness
• Monitor critical engineering programmes and procurement
• Coordinate with Temporary Works Coordinators and Designers on constructability and permanent works
• Manage alignment of consultants with contract terms, fees, schedule, liabilities and warranties
• Review consultant payment applications with contract surveyor for payment processing

Key requirements

• Experience managing multi-disciplinary design packages
• Experience as Principal Designer Representative under CDM 2015
• Desirable: delivery of substation projects for UK Transmission Service Operators (SSEN, National Grid, SPEN, NIE)
• Membership of a UK Engineering institute
