As the organisation’s Health and Safety Competent Person, you will play a critical role in ensuring legal compliance, strengthening risk management and driving a culture of continuous improvement.

About The Role

This is far more than an advisory health and safety position. We are looking for a credible and influential leader who can provide strategic direction while remaining closely connected to operational delivery across a complex, multi-site organisation.

You will work with senior leaders, campus teams and key stakeholders to develop and embed effective health, safety and fire safety frameworks that support safe working and learning environments for staff, students, volunteers, contractors and visitors.

  • Leading incident management, investigations and organisational learning
  • Supporting emergency preparedness and business continuity planning
  • Overseeing contractor and project safety arrangements
  • Providing expert advice, challenge and support to senior stakeholders
  • Using data and insight to identify trends and inform decision-making
  • Driving continuous improvement in health, safety and fire performance

Success in this role will be measured through robust compliance, effective risk management, reliable assurance and the delivery of meaningful improvements across the organisation.

About You

You will be an experienced health and safety professional with a strong track record of leading health, safety and assurance functions across multiple sites or within complex organisations.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has extensive experience in strategic health and safety leadership
  • Can confidently interpret legislation and translate it into practical solutions
  • Has experience leading audit, assurance and compliance programmes
  • Is comfortable influencing and challenging senior stakeholders where required
  • Has strong analytical and reporting skills and can use data to drive decisions
  • Can successfully balance strategic priorities with operational realities
  • Is confident leading organisational change and improvement initiatives
  • Brings a collaborative, practical and solutions-focused approach

You will hold an appropriate professional health and safety qualification, ideally be Chartered IOSH or working towards chartered status, and have experience operating within a multi-site or regulated environment.
