Senior Rail Civil Engineer

Overview

As a Senior Rail Civils Engineer at Arup, you will lead civil engineering input for complex multidisciplinary rail projects, from feasibility to detailed design, while mentoring colleagues and promoting Safe by Design practices. You’ll work closely with clients and delivery partners to translate requirements into innovative, safe solutions and help grow our Rail Civils capability. Your role blends technical leadership with stakeholder collaboration in a supportive, values-driven environment that values social impact and digital innovation.

Responsibilities

• Lead civil engineering contributions across projects from feasibility through detailed design
• Review drawings, calculations and technical documentation to ensure quality and safety
• Manage design risks and support Safe by Design, CDM and CSM processes
• Act as a trusted client interface to communicate technical solutions and align with client needs
• Provide technical leadership and mentoring to apprentices, graduates, technicians and engineers
• Support adoption of digital tools, automation, coding and AI to improve design quality and efficiency
• Collaborate across multidisciplinary design teams with delivery partners and Network Rail stakeholders
• Consider and apply Network Rail standards and RSSB Railway Industry Standards in designs
• Knowledge of CRE responsibilities on Network Rail projects is valuable
• Encourage best practices and professional development within the Rail Civils team

Key requirements

• Experience delivering and checking rail civils designs across feasibility, scheme and detailed design stages
• Degree, HND or equivalent in Civil Engineering or related discipline; ideally Chartered Engineer with ICE or similar
• Solid understanding of Network Rail standards, RSSB standards, CDM, CSM and Safe by Design
• Ability to lead cross-disciplinary teams and provide technical guidance
• Experience with Bentley MicroStation and ProjectWise; interest in digital tools, automation, coding or AI is welcomed
• Client-facing experience and ability to build trusted relationships
