Job Overview
GenTech Recruitment is currently recruiting for an experiencedTransport Manager to join a well-established builders merchant and distribution company based in Newry.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced transport professional to take responsibility for the day-to-day management of a busy transport operation, ensuring deliveries are completed safely, efficiently and on schedule.
The successful candidate will oversee driver management, route planning, fleet compliance and transport coordination while maintaining high standards of customer service and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee the daily running of transport and distribution operations.
Plan and coordinate delivery routes, schedules and vehicle allocations.
Manage, motivate and support a team of HGV drivers.
Ensure deliveries are completed safely, efficiently and on time.
Monitor vehicle servicing, maintenance, inspections and roadworthiness.
Ensure compliance with drivers’ hours, tachograph regulations and transport legislation.
Maintain accurate transport records and compliance documentation.
Coordinate driver rotas, annual leave and operational cover.
Liaise with warehouse teams, branch management and customers to ensure smooth deliveries.
Resolve delivery delays, scheduling conflicts and operational issues.
Monitor transport costs, vehicle utilisation and overall performance.
Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs.
Maintain high standards of health and safety across transport operations.
Essential Requirements
Previous experience as a Transport Manager, Transport Supervisor or in a similar role.
Strong knowledge of HGV transport operations and relevant legislation.
Experience managing drivers and coordinating daily deliveries.
Excellent organisational, leadership and communication skills.
Strong understanding of vehicle maintenance, roadworthiness and transport compliance.
Ability to work under pressure and manage changing priorities.
Good IT skills and experience using transport management systems.
A proactive, hands-on approach to problem-solving and operational management.
Desirable Experience
Transport Manager CPC qualification.
Previous experience within builders merchants, construction materials or distribution.
Experience coordinating multi-drop deliveries.
Knowledge of HIAB or crane-assisted deliveries.
Experience managing fleet costs and improving transport efficiency.
