Role Description
The Locum Specialist Speech & Language Therapist (stroke) is a part-time role based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The postholder will provide specialist assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for adults with stroke-related communication and language disorders, as well as dysphagia. The post covers the community SLT service to patients post-stroke as well as cover on the acute stroke ward in the hospital. Time required in each area will be flexible and may change going forward according to service demands. The therapist will work closely with multidisciplinary stroke teams and contribute to discharge planning and rehabilitation pathways. The role also involves documenting clinical interventions, educating patients, families, and carers, and signposting to appropriate support services such as the Stroke Association.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated expertise in Speech Therapy and management of stroke-related acquired communication and eating, drinking & swallowing difficulties.
- Strong skills in assessing and treating Communication Disorders and Language Disorders in adult stroke populations.
- Clinical competence in Dysphagia assessment and intervention, including safe swallow management and feeding recommendations.
- Recognized degree in Speech & Language Therapy and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
- Experience working in acute or rehabilitation stroke settings and within multidisciplinary teams.
- Effective communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills, with a patient-centered, inclusive approach.
- Ability to work autonomously, manage a varied caseload, and adapt to changing clinical priorities.
- Commitment to continuing professional development, evidence-based practice, and service improvement.
