Senior or Principal Flood Risk Engineer

Overview

In this role you will lead Flood Risk Assessments for development projects, ensuring compliance with the NPPF and sustainable drainage strategies. You will work across private and public sector schemes, collaborating with clients, design teams and authorities to identify constraints and opportunities. You will develop drainage concepts, perform hydraulic calculations and contribute to high-profile schemes across the UK. You will mentor junior staff and engage in client-facing activities, shaping flood risk solutions and delivery. Responsibilities

• Author Flood Risk Assessments for a mix of private sector development and public sector flood risk management schemes
• Develop conceptual surface water drainage strategies with SuDS and hydraulic calculations
• Participate in meetings with clients, design teams, local authorities and consultees
• Identify and communicate drainage constraints and opportunities at development sites
• Produce and review FRAs and drainage strategies using MicroDrainage/InfoDrainage
• Apply knowledge of planning policy and guidance (NPPF, SuDS Manual)
• Understand hydrological/hydraulic modelling; use tools like Tuflow, Flood Modeller, FEH
• Manage projects with sound financial control and client-facing communication
• Mentor junior staff and write clear, concise reports

Key requirements

• At least 5 years of experience in flood risk / drainage engineering
• Strong knowledge of NPPF and SuDS Manual
• Experience with hydraulic modelling and drainage design
• Familiarity with MicroDrainage/InfoDrainage; Tuflow; Flood Modeller; FEH
• Client-facing project management and reporting experience
• Mentoring ability and clear communication skills
