Lead Cable Design Engineer

Overview

In this role you drive the technical leadership and strategic delivery of HV transmission cable systems across major projects. You’ll act as the principal technical authority, guiding design teams and ensuring compliant, innovative solutions for AC and DC, overhead and underground networks. You’ll shape methodologies, support tendering, and mentor engineers while representing Arup with clients, regulators and contractors. This position sits at the intersection of design excellence, risk management and industry collaboration, within a bold grid modernization program.

Responsibilities

• set and uphold best-in-class HVAC/HVDC cable design practices
• lead engineering teams and deliver large-scale projects
• oversee full lifecycle of HV transmission cable systems (AC/DC, overhead/underground)
• approve detailed designs and champion continuous improvement
• guide design teams, conduct rigorous technical reviews
• support tendering with technical insight and cost optimization
• represent the company in client, regulator and contractor interfaces
• spearhead new technology initiatives and design methodology enhancements

Key requirements

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline; Chartered Engineer status essential
• extensive experience in high-voltage transmission cable design (HV/EHV)
• proven track record of leading engineering teams on large projects
• strong knowledge of IEC, IEEE standards
• proficiency in design software (CDEGS, CYMCAP, Comsol, AutoCAD or equivalent)
• excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
• previous National Grid experience preferred
