Principal Electrical Engineer

Overview

As a Principal Electrical Engineer, you will lead electrical design for Defence and Nuclear Energy projects from concept through detailed design. You will play a pivotal role in a multi-disciplinary team, delivering high-quality electrical deliverables while guiding junior engineers and collaborating with clients. You will manage technical scope, ensure compliance with standards, and advocate value engineering to optimise performance, safety, and cost. This hybrid, client-facing role operates within the Nuclear sector, with security clearance a key prerequisite or achievable target. Responsibilities

• Electrical discipline input for projects and proposals, including preparation and approval of engineering documents
• Organising discipline staff, assigning work, and ensuring delivery against plan
• Mentoring graduates and less experienced engineers
• Producing high-quality electrical deliverables within schedule and budget
• Ensuring designs comply with national/international standards and client requirements
• Preparing equipment specifications and installation scopes for HV/LV equipment and related systems
• Reviewing supplier quotations and performing technical bid assessments
• Protection grading and earthing studies; power system analysis; equipment sizing; commissioning support; DNO engagement

Key requirements

• Design and installation knowledge in Nuclear sector
• Significant electrical engineering experience in Nuclear
• Security clearance or ability to obtain
• Extensive knowledge of UK legislation and standards
• Experience with CE marking (ATEX, PED, LVD, Machinery Directive, EMC)
• Awareness of risk management and HSE requirements
• Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
• Chartered or Incorporated engineer status or progress towards it
• Experience with multi-discipline teams and client-facing projects (Desirable)
• ATEX and 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (Desirable)
