Principal Design Engineer

Overview

In this Principal Design Engineer role, you lead the design and integrity of electro-mechanical actuation systems for aerospace nacelles, from concept through production and in-service support. You guide multi-disciplinary teams, supervise design deliverables, and drive robust, manufacturable solutions. The position sits in a new Wolverhampton facility, offering exposure to advanced actuation technology and strategic roadmap development. You will influence project outcomes, customer interactions, and continuous improvement across the lifecycle.

Responsibilities

• Generate innovative design concepts for electro-mechanical actuation systems
• Provide technical leadership to design teams and approve engineering deliverables
• Support all lifecycle stages from requirements capture to production and provision of manufacturing data
• Ensure compliance with design processes and programme requirements
• Develop optimized, robust solutions balancing performance, weight, cost, and manufacturability
• Lead design reviews and present solutions to customers and stakeholders
• Collaborate with customers, suppliers, and internal teams to resolve complex challenges
• Mentor junior engineers and support career development
• Contribute to technology roadmaps and future capability growth
• Lead failure investigations and corrective actions
• Drive continuous improvement with global engineering teams

Key requirements

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
• Experience in a design engineering environment
• Knowledge of machine design and electro-mechanical product configurations
• Proven ability to generate innovative design concepts across product lifecycle
• Experience in failure investigations and problem solving
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
