Overview

As Chief Executive, you will steer one of England’s largest unitary councils, aligning strategy with political insight to deliver service excellence for 640,000 residents. You’ll work closely with elected Members, partners, communities and the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority to shape the region’s future. This is a national‑significance role requiring visible leadership, financial discipline and ambitious transformation. You’ll lead a high‑performing team to sustain resilience and influence at regional and national levels.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic direction for the council in collaboration with elected Members and senior partners
• Lead and inspire a large, diverse workforce to deliver high‑quality public services
• Shape regional and national policy through stakeholder engagement and cross‑sector collaboration
• Ensure financial resilience and strong governance across the authority
• Drive transformation and service improvement at scale across communities and places
• Represent the council in regional forums and with the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority
