Principal Bridge Engineer – Exeter

Overview

In this role you will lead and shape bridge design, assessment and delivery for local government clients in the Southwest, guiding projects from inception to construction. You’ll work within WSP’s Exeter Bridges Team to provide expertise across diverse structures, supported by cross‑site colleagues. Responsibilities

• Act as Technical Lead and Project Manager for bridge schemes through full life cycle
• Deliver compliant designs on time and within budget, meeting H&S, CDM, QA and technical review requirements
• Prepare and review reports, calculations, drawings, schedules, risk assessments, feasibility studies and other documents
• Collaborate with clients and design teams to resolve technical and commercial issues
• Write proposals including cost estimates and manage project commercials
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams across the UK and internationally, plus clients and stakeholders
• Undertake site work for construction supervision, surveys and inspections
• Line management and development of junior team members
• Maintain and enhance understanding of bridges ranging from masonry arches to modern structures
• Contribute to wider team learning and knowledge sharing

Key requirements

• Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer
• Practical knowledge of bridge design, maintenance, strengthening, assessment, inspection and supervision
• Experience in project management of bridge projects
• Knowledge of Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW) in relation to structural schemes
• Understanding and application of Eurocodes to bridge design
• Experience in design and assessment of steel, reinforced and prestressed concrete bridge structures and masonry arches
• Experience with grillage, space frame and finite element analysis software
