Overview

As a Lighting Technical Director at ILM, you will shape the lighting and look of CG scenes, delivering final, high-quality renders for complex shots. You’ll collaborate closely with Lighting and CG Supervisors to define approaches and optimize render workflows for efficiency. You’ll also contribute to Look Dev tasks and ensure seamless integration across the VFX pipeline. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to influence the visual storytelling of diverse projects in a cutting-edge environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design and create lighting and look for CG objects/scenes
  • Perform final CG scene assembly, lighting, and rendering for complex shots
  • Collaborate with Lighting Supervisors and CG Supervisors to determine approaches
  • Create lighting setups or adapt existing setups
  • Optimize render farm usage through efficient rendering setups

Key requirements

  • Deep understanding of the VFX pipeline from modelling through compositing
  • Real-world expertise in lighting and photography
  • Advanced lighting and rendering experience within a VFX environment
  • Experience performing shot Look Dev tasks
  • Excellent listening and communication skills
  • Strong aesthetic sense and problem anticipation with tool proficiency
  • Ability to collaborate in a team and work autonomously when needed
  • Ability to learn new techniques and software quickly
  • Katana knowledge and Renderman knowledge are advantageous
  • Python and/or MEL scripting essential
  • Nuke or similar compositing package knowledge, including layer/pass usage
  • Solid knowledge of Linux operating systems
  • Basic knowledge of physically plausible shading
  • Strong knowledge of lighting techniques and color-space
  • Pipeline scripting ability
  • Excellent Renderman and other unbiased rendering knowledge
  • Hybrid work arrangement: min 2 days on-site per week
