Senior Tax Manager – Tax Investigations

Overview

In this role, you lead the Tax Investigations team within KPMG Private Client to deliver high-quality tax dispute advice for a diversified client base. You manage HMRC enquiries and disclosures, coordinating with clients and internal teams to shape strategy and outcomes. You act as a Subject Matter Expert, sharing insights across Private Client and tax litigation teams while developing client relationships and guiding junior staff. The role combines technical depth with team leadership and business development within a fast-growing practice.

Responsibilities

• Manage and set strategy for complex HMRC enquiries/disclosures for a portfolio of clients, including COP8/9
• Lead preparation of investigation and disclosure reports for HMRC, coordinating with partners and delegating tasks to juniors
• Lead agendas/plans for internal case management and HMRC meetings and drive progress
• Provide SME guidance on tax enquiry and disclosure matters to wider Private Client business
• Develop and maintain client relationships and identify leads for new work
• Support Private Client teams at marketing events and stay aware of other service lines
• Maintain specialist knowledge with knowledge teams and upskill the national Private Client team on HMRC changes
• Assist in team management and coach/develop other team members
• Manage WIP and billing controls to maintain financial performance

Key requirements

• University degree
• CTA/ACA/ACCA qualified or relevant HMRC internal tax qualifications or overseas equivalent
• Proficient in Microsoft Office
• Excellent technical knowledge of tax disputes and HMRC enquiry issues
• Extensive post-qualification experience in enquiry scenarios and voluntary disclosures
• Deep experience in case management of multi-stream complex enquiries (FIS/WMBC)
• Strong analytical mindset and report drafting skills
