Overview

In this role you protect HMRC’s digital services by detecting, investigating, and mitigating identity-related and cyber-enabled fraud. You’ll blend cyber security, data analytics, and operational response to stay ahead of threats, acting as both a technical expert and an operational decision-maker. You will lead complex investigations, mentor junior analysts, and report insights to senior stakeholders to strengthen fraud detection capabilities. Responsibilities

  • Detect and investigate identity-related and cyber-enabled fraud impacting HMRC services
  • Analyze large data sets and develop tools/techniques for fraud detection
  • Lead complex fraud investigations and act as escalation point
  • Drive innovation with automation and advanced analytics to improve response
  • Mentor and develop junior analysts and promote analytical rigor
  • Produce clear reports and presentations for senior stakeholders
  • Collaborate across multiple HMRC teams to interpret threat landscape
  • Adapt to evolving threats and expanding team responsibilities

Key requirements

  • Proven experience in fraud detection, cyber security, or threat intelligence in a large organisation
  • Knowledge of fraud detection techniques including behavioural analysis and anomaly detection; OSINT methods
  • Strong data analysis skills with large data sets; proficiency in scripting and complex queries
  • Solid technical understanding of web and API services and related cyber threats
  • A degree in Data Analysis, Data Science, Information Security, Cyber Security, or equivalent cyber role experience
  • Experience using SIEM platforms (preferably in security operations)
  • Understanding of Identity, Verification and Authentication principles
  • Strong communication, reporting, and visualization skills
  • Scripting skills (e.g., Excel functions) and awareness of fraud risks in digital services
  • Strong communicator across technical and business domains
