Senior/Principal/Associate Civil/Structural Engineer

Overview

In this role you lead civil and structural engineering for UK T&D projects, acting as Design Manager and technical authority. You will mentor engineers, shape proposals, and engage with clients at a senior technical level. You’ll drive design delivery for substations, OHL foundations, and cable routes while ensuring standards compliance. The position blends technical leadership with training, business development, and ongoing innovation to grow Ramboll’s T&D service. You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver high-impact power infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Act as Design Manager / Lead Engineer for T&D civil and structural projects
• Lead delivery of designs for substations, overhead line foundations, and cable routes
• Ensure compliance with UK standards (Eurocodes, BS EN) and National Grid / DNO specifications
• Review, approve, and mentor designs from junior engineers
• Oversee design risk management, technical assurance, and value engineering
• Lead the training strategy for civil and structural engineers within T&D
• Deliver structured technical training, design standards training, and best practice workshops
• Mentor graduate and mid-level engineers
• Attend client, bid, and marketing meetings as senior technical representative
• Support bid strategy, scope definition, technical proposals, and cost/programme input
• Build relationships with DNOs, National Grid, ICPs, and EPC contractors
• Provide technical input to project planning, resourcing, and risk management
• Support innovation, digital engineering, and design efficiency initiatives
• Assist in developing and growing the T&D service offering

Key requirements

• Degree (BEng / MEng) in Civil or Structural Engineering
• Chartered Engineer status (CEng MICE / MIStructE)
• 10+ years’ experience in civil & structural engineering with strong T&D exposure
• Proven experience in Transmission & Distribution infrastructure, including substations and power networks
• Experience working with National Grid and UK DNOs (e.g., NN, SPEN, WPD)
• Experience in framework delivery environments
• Demonstrable experience as Lead Engineer, Design Manager, or Technical Authority
• Strong knowledge of UK design standards and Eurocodes and CDM Regulations
• Confident client-facing communicator
