Fire Engineer – Design Assurance

Overview

In this role you will independently review fire engineering designs to ensure alignment with requirements and standards, providing assurance across fissile and non-fissile projects. You will identify risks, gaps and improvement opportunities, and support design teams in implementing robust mitigation strategies. You will contribute expert fire safety input throughout the project lifecycle, liaising with stakeholders and delivering clear technical reports. This position sits within a broader fire safety and design assurance effort that shapes compliant, practical solutions for complex projects.

Responsibilities

• Independently review fire engineering designs for compliance with project requirements and standards
• Provide design assurance across fissile and non-fissile projects, identifying risks and improvement opportunities
• Review fire strategies, calculations and supporting documentation as part of the assurance process
• Apply a risk-proportionate approach to design review to ensure practical and compliant solutions
• Support project teams in resolving technical fire safety issues and implementing mitigation strategies
• Engage with stakeholders to communicate fire safety considerations and contribute to technical reports and project reviews

Key requirements

• Level 5 Diploma (or equivalent) in fire-engineering
• Membership of a recognised professional body (e.g. Institute of Fire Engineers)
• Ability to review and interpret fire engineering designs and technical documentation
• In-depth knowledge of Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, Approved Document B, and BS 9999
• Familiarity with Eurocodes, British Standards and related guidance documents
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Risk-proportionate and pragmatic approach to fire safety
• Degree in Fire Engineering
• Familiarity with Nuclear Site Licence Conditions and related regulatory frameworks
• Experience across commercial, industrial and residential fire engineering environments
