Lead Mechanical Engineer

Overview

As Lead Mechanical Engineer in Arup’s Water team, you drive the mechanical design and delivery of water and wastewater projects from feasibility to construction. You will lead multidisciplinary teams, shape pumping, treatment and pipework solutions, and manage client engagements within long-term UK water frameworks. This role combines technical leadership, bid involvement, and a culture of rigor and innovation in a global engineering practice. You’ll work with cross-functional teams to deliver robust, efficient water solutions that align with Arup’s purpose and values.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and delivery of water sector projects from feasibility to construction
• Provide technical direction to multidisciplinary teams
• Oversee work of junior engineers and technicians to maintain high standards
• Engage with clients to meet technical requirements, timelines and budgets
• Contribute to work-winning activities including bids and client meetings
• Utilize BIM and Plant 3D to enhance project outcomes
• Promote technical rigor, operational efficiency and innovation within the team

Key requirements

• Proven experience delivering mechanical designs in the water utilities sector (treatment facilities, pumping systems, pipework)
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or progressing toward chartership
• Strong knowledge of UK mechanical design standards and practices in water industry
• Proficiency in digital design tools (BIM, Plant 3D)
• Clear communication and ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
