Managing Quantity Surveyor

Overview

Senior Quantity Surveyor to lead commercial management for a major water and wastewater capital delivery programme in Greater London. You will drive value through cost control, valuations, change management and subcontractor governance within a cross-functional team. The role focuses on resilience, performance and sustainability of the UK water network, with NEC contract exposure and a strong client/operational interface. This is a long-term programme with significant impact on infrastructure delivery.

Responsibilities

• Lead the commercial management of a portfolio of water and wastewater projects
• Prepare and manage payments, valuations and project certifications
• Manage variations, compensation events and contractual change
• Ensure commercial submissions are accurate, timely and well-supported
• Collaborate with Project Managers, operations and clients to maximise project value
• Manage project cashflow and ensure timely certification and payment
• Produce and maintain CVRs, manage WIP, accruals and forecasts
• Monitor costs against contract value, budgets and margins
• Identify commercial risks and opportunities and implement actions
• Manage subcontractor accounts from procurement to final account
• Review subcontract applications, variations and claims
• Build strong relationships with subcontractors and supply chain
• Prepare contractual notices and support dispute resolution
• Maintain commercial records, risk registers and documentation
• Support monthly commercial reporting and project reviews
• Provide commercial guidance to operational teams and develop junior staff
• Promote commercial governance and best practices across projects

Key requirements

• Experience as Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor in construction, infrastructure or utilities
• Strong commercial and contractual knowledge
• Experience in cost management, forecasting and reporting
• Understanding of subcontractor management and supply chain processes
• Knowledge of NEC3 and/or NEC4 contracts
• Experience handling compensation events and contract changes
• Knowledge of CVRs, WIP, accruals and forecasting
• Strong numerical and analytical skills
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel and commercial systems
• Ability to identify and manage commercial risks and opportunities
• Strong communication and stakeholder management
• Ability to work with operational teams, clients and subcontractors
• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
• Experience in water sector delivery, Thames Water or UK water utility is advantageous
