Overview
As an Engineering Lead in Materials Applications, you drive technical materials expertise across gas turbine engine programs from design to in-service stages. You will work within the Materials Application Engineering team, collaborating with cross-functional disciplines to enable safe, compliant, and high-performance components. You tackle material selection, processes, and standards, shaping how products meet safety, quality, and reliability goals. This role offers exposure to CoE-level materials strategies, NPI and fleet modifications, and the chance to mentor junior engineers within a learning culture.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical and expert materials guidance across engine programs for development, production, and in-service activities
- Support material and process selection for New Product Introduction (NPI), fleet, and mods, including standards and specifications
- Approve component and design definitions to ensure safety and quality compliance
- Support manufacturing supply chain for non-conformance through concessions, deviation permits, and definition changes
- Prepare component approval packages and support alternate materials and processes
- Support MRO non-conformance by defining variances and approving repair schemes/procedures
- Oversee application of special processes (heat treatment, forging, casting, welding, brazing, coating, peening, non-conventional machining)
- Provide materials coating and testing requirements for gas turbine components
- Create/revise Materials, Processes and Quality specifications and standards
- Plan material test programmes, analyze data, and build material databases for future designs
- Support REACH compliance mapping and GrantaMI materials database management
- Develop as a local technical lead through client delegations and engineering competency
- Engage in technical discussions with customers to define project specs and requirements
- Ensure proper knowledge and data management aligned with policies and procedures
- Collaborate with other engineering teams to identify product improvement opportunities
Key requirements
- Many years of experience with turbomachinery products in gas turbine for power and/or aviation
- In-depth knowledge of aerospace materials, manufacturing processes, coatings and functions (corrosion/oxidation resistance, thermal protection)
- Experience or knowledge of gas turbine products/components—design, lifing, and stress requirements; aviation industry preferred
- Knowledge of relevant industry standards, regulations, and quality control procedures
- Experience with non-destructive testing methods; NDT Level-II+ preferred
- Mentorship interest for junior engineers
- Strong analytical skills; initiative and flexibility; customer orientation; quality awareness; excellent communication skills
