Overview

As a Professional Principal Mechanical Building Services Engineer, you will lead and deliver multiple medium-complexity projects within a busy Manchester team, handling calculations, drawings, specs, reports, site surveys, and construction-stage duties while liaising with clients. You will support business development, manage client relationships, and may oversee less experienced staff. Your leadership will influence project success, client satisfaction, and team performance as you shape high-quality mechanical design solutions. This role offers the chance to work across sectors, advance sustainability-driven outcomes, and contribute to fee generation and bid activity.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design from concept to completion, including calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reporting
• Manage multiple projects and coordinate workload across a multidisciplinary team
• Support business development, client relationships, and opportunities for new work; contribute to fee estimates and bid writing
• Liaise with clients and stakeholders; deliver site surveys and construction-stage duties
• Mentor and potentially line-manage junior to intermediate engineers
• Develop and oversee accurate project schedules, progress reporting, and resource planning
• Utilise BIM and digital design tools to coordinate design across disciplines
• Ensure compliance with technical, legislative, sustainability, and renewable energy requirements

Key requirements

• Accredited Building Services or Mechanical Engineering degree
• Chartered status or working towards chartership desirable
• Experience delivering mechanical building services designs from concept to RIBA stage 5/6 across sectors
• Strong knowledge of technical and legislative requirements, sustainability, and renewables
• Experience in programme management, progress reporting, fee estimates, and bid writing
• Security clearance or eligibility to obtain MOD SC level
• Hybrid working awareness and ability to collaborate with internal/external stakeholders
