Principal Civil Engineer – Infrastructure

Overview

In this Principal Civil Engineer role, you will lead planning, design, and delivery of diverse infrastructure projects. You’ll manage client relationships from bids to project close-out in a client-facing capacity, while shaping engineering solutions and ensuring regulatory and sustainability standards. The position supports growth of the UK Transport business and involves collaboration with cross-functional teams across multiple sectors. This hybrid role combines technical leadership with stakeholder engagement to deliver high-impact infrastructure outcomes. Responsibilities

• Develop innovative engineering solutions aligned with design briefs and regulatory standards
• Prepare quality bid submissions and manage client relationships throughout delivery
• Draft and evaluate engineering standards and specifications
• Deliver small to medium scale projects within established plans
• Define and improve processes, equipment, and systems for cost and quality
• Manage relationships with service providers to ensure successful outcomes
• Deliver customer-focused solutions using best-in-class approaches
• Utilize established systems to share engineering knowledge
• Maintain professional accreditation and stay updated on industry best practices
• Conduct inspections and recommend remedial actions for compliance
• Identify and implement process improvements
• Build strong relationships with clients and support senior colleagues with key accounts
• Demonstrate good people skills and manage internal and external stakeholders
• Lead on project management and coordination across teams
• Support growth initiatives in the UK Transport business
• Post-award project execution and close-out activities

Key requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or related discipline); chartered or approaching chartered status
• 6–10 years of civil engineering experience
• Proven ability to supervise junior engineers (7–12 months minimum)
• Highways/infrastructure design and drainage design
• Advanced engineering design, development, testing, and compliance experience
• Experience applying designs to Highways England/DMRB, Water UK Sewerage Sector Guidance and Local Authority design guidance
• Strong knowledge of Civils 3D and Infodrainage
• Project scheduling and business requirements analysis
• Project management experience
