Electrical Engineer

Overview

As the sole Electrical Engineer in a lean M&E team, you will act as the internal technical authority for electrical design across capital projects in a clean water utility. You will shape and challenge designs from delivery partners, ensuring governance and technical direction on major schemes, including a WTW upgrade. The role offers autonomy, visibility, and the opportunity to influence outcomes from design authority through to construction and commissioning. You will collaborate with mechanical colleagues and internal stakeholders to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective solutions while driving asset performance and improvements.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the internal electrical technical authority across capital projects
• Review, challenge, and guide electrical designs from external contractors
• Develop outline and functional electrical solutions for projects
• Support electrical and generator upgrade strategies
• Conduct site assessments to evaluate asset condition and improvement needs
• Provide oversight during construction, installation, and commissioning
• Apply HV engineering expertise including protection and integration studies
• Prepare specifications and assist with tender reviews and contractor selection
• Perform feasibility studies and option appraisals
• Support and review internal electrical standards
• Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders for capital delivery
• Ensure safety, quality, and environmental compliance
• Provide technical support during incidents and operational events as required

Key requirements

• Proven electrical engineering experience in water, utilities, or similar industrial sectors
• Experience in a consultancy or contractor-led design environment
• Comfortable operating as an Electrical Design Engineer / intelligent client
• High-voltage experience essential
• Autonomous working capability as the sole electrical specialist
• Practical, site-experienced engineer with strong judgement
