Associate Fire Engineer

Overview

As Associate Fire Engineer, you will lead fire engineering efforts on high-profile projects, working within a global practice to shape design outcomes. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams and client representatives to align fire safety with architectural intent and performance criteria. You’ll apply advanced calculations and modelling to deliver safe, compliant solutions while mentoring junior staff. This role offers high-visibility project leadership and opportunities to influence end-user safety and project success.

Responsibilities

• Lead fire engineering projects and steer technical delivery
• Inform and support design aspirations, functionality and architectural form during design
• Provide client care and consultancy, including project leadership and meetings
• Tackle project financials including invoicing and budget monitoring
• Represent Buro Happold Fire Engineering in design team meetings (internal and external)
• Identify and specify appropriate fixed fire protection systems (detection/suppression)
• Carry out and review fire engineering calculations (smoke modelling, evacuation analysis; CFD optional)
• Support development of junior team members (mentoring/line management)

Key requirements

• Experience as a fire engineering job-leader on major projects
• Higher education qualification in engineering or in a fire safety related subject
• Demonstrable experience delivering fire and life safety designs for UK-based projects
• Track record of securing approval for prescriptive and performance-based designs
• Strong people management skills (including line management)
• Excellent commercial and project management skills
