Local Government & Social Care Lawyer

Overview

In this role you join Weightmans’ Local Government Team in Birmingham or Leicester to handle social care and abuse-related claims, supporting high-quality defendant litigation for public sector clients. You will work closely with senior fee earners to manage cases, draft statements, and assist with court hearings, while contributing to business development and client service. The role offers development towards specialist expertise in this challenging area. You will be part of a national firm with a strong track record in casualty litigation and a culture that values people development.

Responsibilities

• Handling or assisting on social care and abuse files (depending on experience)
• Assisting senior fee earners with case management, legal research, drafting of witness statements, client reports, and court preparation
• Managing disclosure documents
• Attending client meetings and court hearings
• Assisting with instruction of Counsel and experts
• Responding to client and party inquiries with and without supervision
• Achieving set financial and chargeable targets
• Supporting the team’s business development activities
• Other duties within the wider remit of the role

Key requirements

• Experience handling or assisting on social care and abuse files, or casualty claims
• Proactive and forward-thinking mindset
• Willingness to ask questions and engage with the team
• Experience of handling own caseload
• Good drafting, communication, negotiating, IT, and time management skills
• Good attention to detail and ability to multi-task
• Ability to work to strict deadlines and both in a team and independently
• Knowledge of CPR procedure with proven technical ability
